Our marketing artist Carla Evans sits down with us to talk about travel, teleportation, and the creative process!

Kwalee is made up of a diverse bunch of people, and we’re growing all the time! To provide some insight into the multitude of individuals and roles that go into releasing chart-topping games, we’re pulling back the curtain and focusing on the people that make it all happen. Go ahead and explore the full People Make Kwalee archive.

This time, we’re sitting down with our marketing artist and animator, Carla Evans!

Could you introduce yourself to our amazing audience?

Hey, I’m Carla, a marketing artist and animator (also known as a video editor). I create those captivating ads that you see in mobile games, helping you discover new fun things to play.

Video editing and games in general have always been a big part of my life, and during the pandemic I realised I can have the best of both worlds so I went for it. And that’s how I became part of this beautiful and incredibly creative Kwalee family!

What’s your favourite game or genre?

My favourite types of games are action-adventure games that follow a narrative and truly pull you into their world. It’s almost like watching and playing a movie. I feel like these types of games have a great ability to pull at one’s heartstrings and make you fall in love with the characters (if done well) and have a longer-lasting impact.

A couple of great examples would be Red Dead Redemption (and its sequel) and The Last of Us. Spiritfarer is another, which I played on mobile, and I wholeheartedly recommend it!

What does your day-to-day look like?

My everyday role is following the creative process from start to finish. It starts off with the creative brief (a bit of research on trends, and previous successful results for the particular game that we’re working on. So, trying to find the right balance for what could be the next successful creative).

Once the creative brief is approved, the ‘magic’ starts to happen and I begin working on the creative ideas based on the concepts with a structure in place. Each batch has typically 4 videos that, once completed and approved, have to be tested so I would be creating Facebook campaigns for the batches I worked on.

Aside from that I would be having a look at my colleagues’ concepts and final results and give feedback when necessary.

What superpower would you love to have?

Without a doubt, teleportation.

I love travelling the world, and teleportation can give me unblocked access to any place, anytime. Wouldn’t you want to get some fresh air in Thailand for 10 minutes or so? Or Japan? Imagine how cool that’d be!

What was the most adventurous experience you’ve had?

In retrospect, ziplining in Thailand was a lot of fun and super adventurous. We climbed up to the cliff in the middle of a rainforest with little safety gear, which sort of added to the adrenaline rush you get from doing something exciting like that.

What’s your favourite part about the creative process?

Watching the videos I finish creating. It’s great to rewatch them, analyse them, and see if I’m not missing out on anything else. There is the occasional video that I find which I feel particularly proud of!

What’s the biggest mistake you’ve seen folks make when they begin their journey into making creatives?

I wouldn’t categorise this as a ‘negative’ or a ‘major error,’ but it’s quite common for newcomers to present grand, unconventional ideas that they aspire to bring to life, without being certain of their ability to accomplish them with their existing skill set.

So pacing oneself slowly and according to one’s skill set is the best way to learn both the tool and know how to execute smaller-scale  ideas. It’s always advisable to take things a little slow.

What’s some advice you’d give to those who want to work at Kwalee as part of the Creative team?

Be open to creativity, and allow yourself to express interesting ideas. Because everyone welcomes that.
